Stand Down Event for Homeless Veterans November 16

Support the Stand Down event for homeless veterans happening Saturday, November 16 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at 101 East Maud Street in Tavares. Stand Down refers to a grassroots community-based program designed to help the nation’s estimated 107,000 homeless veterans. Homeless veterans are brought together and are provided access to community resources needed to begin addressing their individual problems and rebuilding their lives. This event is sponsored in part by The Veterans Organization of Resource & Recovery for the Homeless in Eustis. The planning committee is asking for help in collecting items for the veterans and in finding veterans to act as ‘Battle Buddies’ to the homeless vets during the Stand Down event. Their job will be to escort homeless veterans around the event. Signup sheets, the list of items requested, and a bin for collecting them are available onsite at UUCLC.

All You Wanted to Know about Qualified Charitable Distributions

Sunday, October 20, a Financial Consultant attending our coffee & conversation group at 9:30 am will give a Special Presentation and answer your questions about the QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution) program.  Are you 70 1/2 years or older & own an IRA or other qualified retirement plan?  Do you wish you could afford to contribute more to UUCLC’s success?  There is a way…and it’s entirely legal! Consider making a QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution) from your RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) out of your IRA, etc. Charitable gifts paid from your IRA, up to 100% of your RMD, can reduce your taxable IRA income and income taxes!  Find out more about this important, but little known way, to make your charitable contributions to UUCLC more tax friendly!  Be sure to join us even if you aren’t quite 70 yet!!

Important News Regarding Emails from the Minister

I have heard from some area clergy colleagues who have had their emails 'spoofed' and messages requesting money have been sent to their congregations. These messages have been crafted to appear as if they are coming from the minister, but are actually generated from a different source.

For the record, I will never send emails to anyone in the congregation requesting direct donations to the minister's discretionary fund or any other program that would ask money be sent directly to the minister. I will also never request that contributions be made in small denomination pre-paid credit or gift cards. If you have received, or at any time in the future receive, an email that appears to be from me requesting donations other than our pledge drive, please contact me or any board member. The email should also be saved for authorities to review.

And, never send donations addressed to the minister. Contributions should only be sent to the Congregation directly, or offered in the weekly plate.
