A Tribute to Ruth Gray

Ruth Gray in the 2009 MLK Parade Ruth Gray was a woman lawyer from New Jersey – one of the first and one the first to have her own law firm. You could not miss her. Outspoken and really, really smart, from day one when you visited this congregation, you would notice her. There was nothing she did not have an opinion about. She was UU to her core. One of the strongest components of her UU faith was social justice. For her, that meant immersion in her community. She worked for environmental protection; she worked for women’s rights, and she worked for population control. She was a crusader for women’s rights, and an avid supporter of Planned Parenthood. Being informed was a part of her UU life. Her TV was frequently on C Span. When the PBS news hour was broadcast, she often refused to take phone calls. She loved life, and she loved the UU life and was not shy about telling others about it. She believed in the potential of the congregation. Her great desire was that we build a strong congregation housed in our own spiritual home and, in the end, she gave everything she could to make that happen.
